Live Teaching: University
Goal: To teach television lighting aesthetics to college students.
Process: In my graduate education studies, I was exposed to many teaching models. A five-step model evolved for me that I have used for multiple age groups in various contexts.
Result:
1) Mini-lesson (in this case, the "Lighting" PowerPoint presentation - see below)
2) Activity/Exercise (Learners do the exercise after the mini-lesson - see the exercise document below the "Lighting" PowerPoint presentation. )
3) Discussion/Reflection (This comes after the activity/exercise - see part 3 of the exercise document below for discussion instructions.)
4) Formative Assessment: In this example, I "walked and taught" to find out how students were progressing. Throughout, I used a variety of strategies to move students from one level of understanding to the next.
5) Summative Assessment: I used the completed worksheets that were part of the exercise to inform my further teaching plans either for individuals or the whole class.
